TROTTING

By Sestinel.

The three-year-old Golden Cross is the latest addition to J. D. Smith’s stable He runs back to the Thelma taproot and bred on good racing lines. A large number of horses were spun out in their work at Addington on Saturday morning in tuning up tasks for engagements at the Addington autumn meeting which opens this week. Amongst those that were sent along were Great Author, Muriel de Oro. Nor’-wester, I’eter baunt, Linkman, Breutlight, Im-

promptu. Royal Silk, Jewel Pointer, Warplane, Baron Bingen, Great Logan, Delightful, Avenger, Logan Chief, Merce Bingen, Gay Paree, On Parade, Mr Penalty, Dark M'Kiuney, Rare Pronto, Harvest Child, Cyone, Gold Country, Daphne de Oro. Nimble Direct, Wilbur White. Donna Galvallis. Country King, Lord Leslie. Colarado, Lifebuoy, Desert Maiden, and Nelson Boy. Red Shadow did a particularly smart work out in 4min 24 4-ssec.

Reports from Christchurch state that since last being put into work. Wilma Dillon seems to have come on fast and he is pacing in his training work very pleasingly. The John Dillon pacer, who is a most attractive mover, started only twice last season.

G. S. Smith has been working Lee Pal in hopples. The Lee Norris trotter showed a good deal of speed when first he was put into work, but was troubled with splints and had to be given a lengthy spell. He has now completely recovered and he has been in work for some time. After showing some speed, he failed to make any further improvement and he is now to be tried as a pacer. His dam, Maori Princess, went at the trotting gait, while his sire, although none too sound, was a very honest trotter. The Addington owner-trainer, E. C. M'Dermott, looks as though he has a good trotter in the making, in the three-year-old Garner. She is by Sonoma Harvester from the Great Audubon mare, Pat Dillon, and she has not been long in work. Garner has a good action and looks as though she will stay. At Tiraaru she started in the mile and five-furlong race, and, later, in the two-mile event. In each race she trotted very steadily and was finishing on satisfactorily. It may take some little time (says “ Argus ”) before she can show speed enough to win, but in tbn meantime her efforts are very promising. Although Wrack was a very brilliant pacer, his sire, Peter the Great is a world-renowned sire of trotters and his eons and daughters are breeding on with remarkable success in America. Some of Wrack’s progeny are double-gaited, amongst the number being White Satin, while the nomination of the New Zealand Cup winner, Wrackjer, in a trotting race suggests that he has the same characteristics. If Wrackler, who is rated as a 4min 23sec two mile pacer, can win a fast trotting race, he will set the seal of his fame as one of the greatest of all time. Peter Bingen, a very fast pacer, is another that showed a lot of ability at the trotting gait. Several two-year-olds engaged in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes were exercised at Addington on Saturday, Mr J. R. M'Kenzie’s Prince Roydon, by Great Bingen—Slapfast, and Taxpayer, by Great Bingen—Nyallo, being amongst the number. Prince Roydon, a very promising youngster, went a couple of furlongs with Red Shadow, Ayrmont Chimes and Rollo, while Taxpayer was exercised with Gold Whip and a two-year-old by Matchlight from a Coldstream Bells—Jenny Lind mare, the property of J. Bryce. The lastnamed is a well-mannered juvenile, and appears to have done a good bit of work. With the three two-year-olds mentioned the field for the Sapling Stakes should be well up to the class seen out in previous years.
