The sports concluded, the Guides were lined up in horseshoe formation and Miss Barron presented the cup to Milton. FARMERS’ UNION. Mr J. A. Johnston presided over a meeting of the Farmers’ Union in the County Chambers last night, Mr. Robert Livingstone, Dominion organiser for the Union, was present. The Minister of Education (Mr R. Masters) wrote regretting that it was not possible to accede to the union’s request for direct representation on the South Otago High School Board. The Minister of Agriculture wrote regretting that he could not include lime in the list of fertilisers to be subsidised from the Rural Credits Fund.

The general manager of the railways wrote with regard to the suggestion that all railway freights be reduced. He said it was regretted that at the present juncture it was not possible to do so—lt was pointed out in the course of discussion that the motor lorry rates were still 10s a ton below those of the railway; and it was resolved to write to the railways manager disagreeing with his conclusions. Mr Livingstone, in the course of some remarks on profitable farming, even under existing conditions, mentioned several sidelines which, he thought, could be pursued to advantage in this district.—lt was decided that the secretary should write to the Minister of Agriculture asking for information regarding products of the district other than those obtainable from sheep and dairy farming. It was decided to forward a strong protest to the Minister against the proposed closing of small country schools. FARMERS’ COSTS. At the meeting of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union on Saturday night the Dominion organiser (Mr Robert Livingstone) stated that if lime and fertiliser and fodder were given to the farmer free the cohntry would benefit enormously, but the individual farmer would not. In this country 2001 b was the average butter-fat production per cow, which, at Is per lb, meant £lO return in cash to the farmer, whereas it cost him £9 for cultivation and expenses and £7 for milking expenses for an area that would support one good cow in a year. Thus, the farmer was a loser, and in the case of the sheep farmer the position was even worse. BOWLING. Balclutha bowlers visited Kaitangata yesterday. Scores (Kaitangata names first): —A. M'Ghie, J. Pilling, C. Bisset, E. M'Fadyen 20, Sim, Dawson, Hayward, R. Buchanan 26; A. Morris, T. Espie, J. Melville, J. Fenton 7, White, Smart, O’Hara, Macnamara 22; P. Souness, L. Gardner. E. Mackie, W. Neill 26, Culbert, Cunningham, Riach, Poynter 11; J. Pennell, T. Thomson, J. Campbell, P. Prescott 28, J. Sinclair, J. Gold, J. Johnston, J. Finn 13. Totals: Kaitangata 81, Balelutha 72. Milton defeated Stirling on the latter’s green. These teams were previously running level for championship honours. CRICKET. The semi-final for the Waiwera Cup was played at Owaka on Saturday between Balclutha and Owaka. Owaka batted first and made 109, the chief scorers being Hannay (35), Winchester (25), and Brownlie (17, not out).
