SALARY REDUCTIONS
PUBLIC SERVICE PROTEST l l’eb United Press association 1 HAWERA, March 19. A meeting of approximately 50 raembers of the Public Service Association, held last evening, passed the following resolution“ That in view of_ the fact that there has been no appreciable fall in the cost of living since the last cut we are of opinion that any further reductions of salaries and wages would aggravate the economic position, embarrass the business community, and eventually result in economic collapse.”
COMBINED .LOCAL COMMITTEE
CIRCULATION OF PETITION. A meeting of the combined committee of the local public service organisations was held in the -Railway Social Hall on Friday. Representatives from the various Railway, .Post and Telegraph, Public Service Associations, and the Teachers’ Institute were present, all the local section committees being represented. Mr M. Connolly was voted to the chair, and explained that the local combined committee had been formed in order to carry out the policy laid down by the Central Combined Committee in Wellington. Petitions to Parliament praying that no further wage cuts be inflicted upon the workers of the Dominion had been circulated for signature, and a good response was reported. It was decided to write to the Retailers’ Association suggesting a meeting with the Combined Committee in order to discuss the report of the Economy Commission. It was reported that circulars setting out the position with regard to wage cuts had been received from Wellington, and these would shortly be distributed.
