GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir. — Is it a fact that the Council of Churches wanted to hold the Good Friday service in the Octagon Hall, but when the Central Mission asked for half the collection towards its relief work the other churches decided not to use the Octagon Hall, rather than in any way help Mr Neale in his depot work? I understand the mission officials offered the use of the hall and organ quite free of charge, and cancelled arrangements for a service of their own in order to co-operate with the Council of Churches. Leading churches talk a lot of _ hot air” about church union, but here is an instance of a miserable spirit, just because the mission depot is to benefit. Why this opposition from the churches to this depot which is doing such splendid work? I have been wondering why our leading wealthy Presbyterian Churches, with their high-salaried ministers, are not actively engaged in helping to run the depots, or in supporting those who are. Why is_ it left to the Anglican Church, Salvation Army Methodist, and other churches. Where is the big. Presbyterian Church? Present-day conditions call for something being done outside ordinary church work. I hope all the churches will co-operate in assisting the unemployed. —I am, etc., Economy.
