OVERCROWDED TRAMCARS

TO THE EDITOR SIR— On Friday evening 1 had the misfortune to travel from one of our suburbs on a city tram, which tram being crowded to the extent of 36 standing passengers. This was equal to 100 per cent, overload, and, on an easy computation, provided approximately 500 per cent, profit. I assing the Tram Sheds, I noted the best part of 20 idle trams, including a few big cars. Are there no spare motormen or conductors, or is this overcrowding pait of the department’s economy measures' Apart from the inconvenience with which passengers, both'sitting and standing, ha\e to put up, the atmosphere on this tram was, to say the least of it, most unhealthy. ~ Perhaps the management might consider providing the public with a better service with more healthy conditions and giving the tramway men more employment and the department less profit.—l am, etc., March 19. Hygiene.
