ORKNEY AND SHETLAND SOCIETY

ANNUAL SOCIAL AND DANCE. The function held by the Orkney and Shetland Society in the O.K. Cafe on Saturday evening proved to be the most successful and enjoyable that has yet taken place, there being present 130 members and friends. Mr W. F. Stevenson (president), in his opening remarks, extended to all present a hearty welcome and wished them a pleasant evening. He was sorry their patron, Mr W. B. M. Fea, was, owing to recent illness, unable to be present. As that was the last social for the year he reminded members of the annual meeting which would take place in the second week in April. The greater part of the evening was spent in dancing, the music for which was supplied by the newly-formed Regal Dance Orchestra and was enjoyed by everybody. During the evening Mr Currie read poems which were written and composed by Mr Hughson, a native of the Shetlands. These were entitled “ Hame and Mither.” The following items were interspersed with the dancing:—The Choir, ode, “Orkney and Shetland Isles,” “ There Was a Lad," and “ Angelas quartet—Mesdaraes Payne, Frazer, Harper, and Miss Baxter; duet, Miss R. Baxter and O, Kennedy; song. Mr N. Robertson, “ Afton Water Master George Reilly, Irish jig. Mr W. F. Andrews proved an efficient pianist and Mr J. F. Spence acted as M.C.
