OBITUARY
MR ARTHUR HECKLER The death occurred at his home at Mount Pleasant, Waikouaiti, on Thursday, of Mr Arthur Heckler, at the age of 03 years. Mr Heckler was the son of Mr William Heckler, who was one of the earliest settlers of the district. He was educated at the Waikouaiti School, and he later took up the pursuit of agriculture on his father’s farm at Mount Pleasant, becoming the owner of the property on the death of his father. Mr Heckler was prominent in the public affairs of the district, and, in addition to serving for several years on theSchool Committee and the Domain Board, he also sat on the Borough Council for several terms, and filled the position of Mayor of the Borough for one term. He was a member of the Waikouaiti County Council over a long period. He took a keen interest in local sporting matters, and played for the Waikouaiti Rugby Football Club in his youth, remaining a strong supporter of the club when he ceased to be an active player. Ho was also a member of the Waikouaiti Bowling Club. At the monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council on Saturday, reference was made by the chairman (Cr Preston) to the loss which the district had suffered by the death of Mr Heckler. Mr Heckler had been a valuable member of the council during the years he had sat at the council table. A motion of sympathy with the relatives was carried, the'councillors standing in silence.
