YOUNG BIRD SHOW

DUNEDIN SPECIALISTS’ CLUB TWENTIETH ANNUAL FIXTURE The Dunedin Specialists’ Young Bird Club's twentieth annual show was opened in the Victoria Hall yesterday. The entries showed an improvement on those of last year, and all classes w r ere well represented. In the fancy pigeons class, the judge (Mr R. Bankshaw) said that in his opinion nothing better had been seen in Dunedin for many years. It was evident that the exhibitors had gone to a good deal of trouble with their birds, which were well trained and excellently presented. .There w’as a good show of magpies, and the tumbler pigeons were also ah attractive section. The nun pigeon was the best that the judge had seen for 20 years in Dunedin. The special prize bird in the boys’ classes was a well bred bird. In the homer class the blue chequered cock section was good, but several of the birds were hardly far enough developed for show purposes. The hen in this class, however, was in the opinion of the judge, the best in the show. The winner of the red chequered cock and .the first prize pied cock were outstanding birds. The winner of the black chequered cock class also made a good showing. The judge of the cookery section (Mr J. Davidson) expressed pleasure at the fact that entries in this section were much more numerous than last year, and said that it was doubtful if the quality of the winning exhibits could have been improved on. The fruit cajkes were a particularly good class, and it was only with difficulty, in the case of the light fruit cakes, that he could separate the first and second prize winners. The exhibits in the children’s classes were, also of a high standard, and in the majority of cases the baking would have done credit to adults.
