ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
FARMER FOUND DEAD , (Pek United Press Association.) HAMILTON. March 18. Maurice Sweeney, a farmer, of Walton, was found dead on his farm yesterday with a shotgun beside him and a wound in his chest. He is survived by his wife and two children. KILLED BY MOTOR VAN (Pee United Press Association.) GISBORNE. March 18. Struck by a tradesman’s van which mounted a footpath, William Hazell, aged 64, a greengrocer, suffered head and back injuries, which later proved fatal. The deceased was opening his premises for the day when a van driven by Jack Elliott got out of control, apparently through failure of the steering gear. The machine careered on to the footpath, snapping two veranda posts and carrying Hazell on its bonnet a distance of oyer half a chain, finally crushing him against a fence. The deceased leaves a wife, three daughters, and a son. RESULT OF ILL-HEALTH DEATH OF MERCHANT. An inquest on the body of John Albert Aiuge, who was found dead at St. Clair on Thursday morning, was held at the Morgue yesterday before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., sitting as coroner, Evidence of identification was given by Frederick Fawcett Farra, a brother-in-law of the deceased, who, he said, had been in ill-health for about five months. He had been very worried over business troubles. Constable Hamilton gave evidence regarding the finding of the body, and Constable Sehruffor corroborated the evidence concerning the health of the deceased. A verdict that the deceased committed suicide while in a depressed state of mind as a result of ill-health was returned. YOUTH’S LEG FRACTURED William S. Chalmers, 15 years of age, was admitted to the Hospital shortly after mid-day yesterday suffering from a fracture of the left leg. He was riding a motor cycle down Stuart street when he collided with a motor car at the corner of Moray place. The boy resides at 50 Burns street, Caversham. INJURIES TO FACE Clarence Murphy, aged about 21 years, an employee of the Shag Valley sheep station, suffered severe facial injuries yesterday when he was struck by a falling wool press. He was conveyed to Dunedin and admitted to the Hospital for treatment.
