THE SUGAR INDUSTRY

EMPIRE PRODUCERS INCREASED DUTY URGED. LONDON, March 17. Mr L. S. Amery introduced an Empire Sugar Federation deputation to Mr Neville Chamberlain, which asked the Government to assist Empire producers by increasing the duty on foreign sugar by one farthing per pound. The Chancellor assured the deputation of his sympathy with Empire trade, and promised to consider the request in conjunction with the Budget. BENEFIT TO QUEENSLAND. LONDON, March 17. If, as is generally believed in the sugar trade circles, Mr Chamberlain imposes an additional farthing per lb duty on foreign sugar, Queensland growers benefit considerably, because they will be able to demand a higher price from refiners. Even should the additional farthing per lb be passed on to the British consumer, the latter would be paying only per lb, which, according to the latest retail prices, isi cheaper than most countries, except the United States.
