Among the many cases of bankruptcy in Budapest since the crisis in the summer is that of Porfi and Son, hatmakers to the Royal Family and the aristocratic society of Hungary. The firm of Porfi was founded in 1913 by a member of one of the oldest patrician families of Budapest. lu 18G7, when the Emperor Francis Joseph was crowned King of Hungary, Mr Porfi was called to the palace, as the crown was found to bo 2f inches too large for the Emperors’ head, and a lining of gold brocade was inserted to make it fit. The crown of St. Stephen is extremely heavy, and on the night before the coronation of King Charles, Mr Hauster, the then head of the firm and son-in-law of Mr Porfi, was asked by Queen Zita to provide a storm-band of gold brocade to prevent the crown slipping' during the ceremony.
