AMATEUR SWIMMING

GIRL GUIDES’ CARNIVAL BISHOPSCOURT WINS WALKER AND HALL CUP. For an initial venture the first annual swimming carnival organised by the Otago Girl Guides’ Association which was staged in the Municipal Baths last evening, proved to be one of the most successful minor fixtuies that have been held this season. Good entries came forward in all the events, and, considering that many of the swimmers were comparative novices, and had had little experience of competitive swimming, the standard of performance all round was remarkably good. With the Walker and Hall Cup for the highest aggregate points at stake among the various troops, competition was particularly keen, and no less enthusiastic than the swimmers were the several hundred Guides and Brownies who had assembled to cheer their troopmates, on to victory. The trophy was won by Bishopscourt Troop with 21 points, Knox No. 1 Troop being runners-up with 19 points. The president of the Dunedin executive (Mrs Stevenson) presented the cup to the winning troop at the conclusion of the meeting. During the evening exhibitions of swimming and diving were given by several of the local champions, and a display of fancy swimming was given by Mr P. Matheson.
