Friday, March 18. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, 8.M.) DRUNKENNESS. David William Campbell was charged with drunkenness. He had been three times previously convicted within six months. —The defendant, who said he was a relief worker and had no money, was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment. THEFT OF MOTOR WHEELS. Harold Bell Muir pleaded guilty to a charge of the theft of a Ford car wheel and tyre, valued at £3 10s, the property of a person unknown. He also appeared for sentence on another charge of the theft of a motor car wheel.—Detective Sergeant Nuttall said that no owner had been found for the second wheel, which had apparently been taken off a visiting car. The accused, was a married man with four young children. —After perusing a report submitted by _ the probation officer the magistrate said that a man who indulged in sneak thieving was not deserving of much consideration. However he would be admitted to probation for a period of 18 months, on condition that he disposed of his motor car. CHARGE WITHDRAWN. A young man, whose name was suppressed, was charged with the theft of a motor cycle carburettor. —On the application of Detective Sergeant Nuttall, who stated that the case had been adjourned for 12 months in order that the accused should have an opportunity of showing good behaviour, the case was withdrawn. A BAD RECORD. James Watson MTvor pleaded guilty to charges of, at Kahuika, stealing a battery valued at 15s, the property of Robert Hollows; at Waimatuku, stealing various articles valued at £3 3s fid, the property of Alexander Robbie: at Heriot, stealing a gold ring valued at £4, the property of Arthur Thomas Ottrey.—Detective Sergeant Nuttall said that the accused had been before .the court on March 7 and had been sentenced to 18 months’ reformative detention on a charge concerned with a motor cycle. He had an exceptionally long list, and since 1921 had spent most of his time in gaol.—The magistrate said that he did not think that the sentence would have been different had these charges been preferred against the accused when he had previously been Before the court. He would be convicted and discharged. BREACH OF ARMS ACT. On a charge of failing to produce a firearm on demand, Alexander John M’Gillvray was convicted without penalty. —Sub-inspector Cameron said that the police were having considerable difficulty in tracing revolvers. A number of people had been careless as to what had become of firearms that had been in their possession.—The defendant said that he had posted the revolver to a firm in Dunedin in 1921, and had not seen it since. CASTING OFFENSIVE MATTER. On a charge of casting offensive matter in a public place, Francis Patrick Silva was convicted and fined 10s and costs (10s). in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. FAILURE TO OBTAIN PERMIT.

Catherine J. Sandjlands was charged with making alterations to a building without a permit.—After hearing the evidence, bis Worship said that the case would serve as a warning, and the defendant would be convicted without penalty. UNLAWFULLY ON PREMISES.

On charges of being unlawfully on licensed premises, John Bond. Henry Thomas Haines. William Ledgcrwood, Jack Treves, and John Fraser were each fined 20s and costs. MOTORISTS CHARGED.

William H. Bramwcll was convicted on a charge of driving a motor lorry without a heavy traffic license. James S. Wootton was fined 5s mul costs (10s) on a charge of leaving a motor car stationary on the wrong side of the street.

James Charles Eraser, Leo M’Cormack. John W. Owens, and Louis Walker were each fined 40s and costs (10s) on charges of dangerous driving. Joseph Mullin and Robert Alexander Ryan were each fined 10s and costs (10s) for driving without licenses. —On similar charges, Frederick John Strang and Edward Ringham were fined 5s and costs (10s). William John Rogers was fined 20s and costs (10s) for driving over an intersection at more than 15 miles an hour, and was convicted on a charge of driving without a license.

Stanley Alexander Park was fined 10s and costs (10s) on a charge of passing a stationary tramcar. Frank N. Taylor was charged with ruling a motor cycle without lights and footrests. —On the charge of having no lights the defendant was fined 10s and costs (10s), and the other charge was withdrawn. A charge of riding a motor cycle without an efficient silencer, which was brought against Archibald Still, was dismissed. , Albert N. Jordon and Ernest Wilfred Robbins were each fined 10s and costs (10s) on charges of leaving motor cars unattended. . For being in charge of motor vehicles at night without the prescribed lights, John Ronald Mooney and John Robertson Parjane were each fined 10s and costs (10s). —On a similar charge George Frederick Williams was fined 5s and costs (10s). Francis Janies Bradley was charged with being an unlicensed driver and with failing to keep to the left of the centre line of Crawford street—After evidence had been heard in connection with a collision in which the defendant had been involved, the defendant was convicted and discharged on the first charge, and was fined 40s and costa (10s) on the second. Frederick George Smith pleaded not guilty to a charge of dangerous driving. —Sergeant O’Shea said that the defendant had turned from Princes street into Stafford street at from 25 to 30 miles an hour and had travelled up the street for a considerable distance on his wrong side.—The defendant said that he naa gone on the wrong side to give another car the right of way.—The charge was altered to one of failing to keep as far as possible to the left-hand side of the road, and on this count the defendant was fined 20s and costs (10s). As the sequel to a collision. George Gilbert Caird was charged with cutting a corner, and. Reynolds Harvey with dangerous driving.—The defendants pleaded guilty and each was fined 20s and costs (10s). HAWKING WITHOUT LICENSE. John Doull was convicted on a charge of hawking without a license.
