Vice-Regal. Lady Bledisloe, acting on medical advice, has cancelled all public engagements until after Easter in order (says a Press Association telegram from Wellington) to effect a more rapid and complete recovery from a recent injury a strained tendon received ■\vliile playing lawn tennis.

Mr W, G. Riddell was a passenger for Wellington by the express yesterday morning. Mr L. G. Michaels, Christchurch representative of the railways advertising branch, travelled to Christchurch by express train yesterday. Archdeacon Russell, who has been attending the meeting of the Standing Committee, returned to Oamaru by yesterday morning’s express. Mr J. B. Nichol travelled north by the express yesterday morning to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Law Society in Wellington. Dr Donald Stevenson left by the express yesterday morning to take up his appointment at Melbourne.

Mr Henry Longden, of London, was a passenger for Christchurch by yesterday morning’s express. The Rev. B. R. C. Nottage, a Knox College student, who was recently ordained, left by the express yesterday morning, en route for , Tonga, New Hebrides, where he has been appointed Presbyterian missionary to succeed the Rev. 0. Michelsen.

Archbishop Redwood, Metropolitan of the Roman Catholic Church in New Zealand, who will lay the foundation stone of the new Mosgiel Seminary on Sunday, will arrive in Dunedin to-day. His Grace, who celebrated his ninety-third birthday yesterday, is the oldest consecrated bishop in the world. The friends of Mr H. D. Stronach, manager of the Commercial Union Assurance Company, will learn with regret that an indisposition, which is at present confining him to his residence, will necessitate his entering a hospital for the purpose of an operation. Among the list of honorary degrees to be conferred by the University of Glasgow on June 15 of this year is that of LL.D. to Dr R. J. T. Bell, professor of mathematics in the University of Otago. Mr J. R. Dreaver has been appointed to the seat on the City Licensing Committee rendered vacant through the death of Mr David Larnach.

Mr Arthur Walker, New Zealand manager for Messrs Gordon and Gotch (N.Z.) Advertising, Ltd., who has been on a short periodical visit to Dunedin, will leave for the north to-day.

The Otago Education Board yesterdaygranted Mr W. R. Brugh leave of absence for a term, and expressed the hope that he and Miss Brugh would enjoy their trip abroad. Mrs Emma Haggett, of Wanganui, attained her 100th birthday yesterday (says a Press Association telegram). She arrived at Lyttelton by the ship British Empire in 1864 with her husband, who came out under engagement to the proprietor of the Canterbury Standard newspaper, which ceased publication the following year. Mr Haggett then became overseer of the Christchurch Press for some years. There are three sons, two daughters, 24 grandchildren, and 34 greatgrandchildren living. Advice was received from the Marine Department by the Otago Harbour Board at its meeting last night that Mr J. W. Munro, M.P., had been appointed to the vacancy on the board caused by the death of Mr D. Larnach. The chairman expressed the board’s pleasure at being able to welcome an old member back to its meetings. Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, relieving magistrate, will fill the vacancy in the Hawke’s Bay district during the absence of the resident magistrate, Mr A. M. Mowlein, who will leave this week on a holiday visit to the Old Country. The retirement on superannuation of Mr A. M'Neil, business agent for the Railways Department, is announced in a Press Association telegram from Wellington. Mr M'Neil joined the service as a cadet at Christchurch in 1897 and served successively at Darfield, Southbridge, Lyttelton, Timaru, Makikihi, Makotuku, Napier. Nelson, and Wanganui. He was placed in control of the central booking office in Wellington in 1923. At the Dunedin Exhibition he was in charge of the tourist and inquiry bureau, which was located in the Exhibition building. In 1925 he was appointed to the position of business agent. Mr M'Neil’s successor will be Mr_ D. S. Broughton, who has hitherto carried out these duties at Dunedin.
