TROTTING

By Sentinel. Nominations for the Ashburton Gold Cup are due to-day. . K. G. Holmes has a very promising two-year-old in work by Rey de Oro from Becky Logan, who is engaged m this season’s two-year-old classic event. Becky Logan, who is by Logan Pointer •from the Electioneer mare Miss Becky, .was one of the gamest of pacers, and .won several races, though usually unbound. This is her first foal. • The trotter Tanepai put up a fane race in the Claremont Handicap at the Timaru meeting at the end of last month. He was quickest away, and led the field till passed and beaten by Gennanicus by a length, near the post. There was a very strong nor’-wester blowing, and he had none the best of it through having to make the pace. He was an acceptor, like Germanicus, on the farst day of the Forbury Park Club s meeting, which was held the week following the Timaru fixture, but, much to the surprise of many, he was not started, nor was he an acceptor for the second day of the same meeting. He figures on the limit in the Improvers’ Handicap at the New Brighton meeting, and, if in his Timaru form, will take a lot of beating. Anon who has already won two races for W. J. Tomkinsou, is revelling m his track work, and gives every promise of adding to his list of wins before long. Royal Drusus has shown good form on the West Coast, and it will be interesting to see how he shapes at New Brighton. Lord Matchlight has never looked better than he does at present, but it takes something more than looks to win races. He is too unreliable to be recommended. G. M'Kendry is not hurrying Margaret Parrish and she is appreciating her treatment. The Guy Parrish mare will win good races when she comes right. Linella has had a change of stables, and is now trained by B. J. Mackie at Kaikoura. She_ will be raced at the Wairarapa meeting. ... D. C. Watts, who recently had to relinquish his association with J. Henderson as first horseman on account of illhealth, is making a good recovery. _ Special Sun gives every indication of being an early winner for C. S. Donald. He is engaged in the Eclipse Handicap at New Brighton, an event for three and four-year-olds. Gold Whip, who was among the runners at Kaikoura, is a three-year-old gelding by Matchlight from After Dark. He is v one of J. Bryce’s team. \ Headlight js on the front of the handii cap for the. Dash Handicap at New ' Brighton, and he should set a merry dip over the mile. Headlight will probably never reach the tightest classes, but he will win several races before the handicappers stop him
