(Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 24. “ We cannot carry on in the same circumstances unless we are given , some assistance from Parliament,” said Mr II J. Otley, chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, today, when discussing the report of the Benevolent Committee. The position was desperate, Mr Otley continued. There were 500 or 600 men applying for relief weekly, and there was no accommodation for them. Overr crowding interfered with the work of the office staff, and the hearing of applications occupied the secretary, assistant secretary, two inspectors, and several members of the committee for two days jind a-half eaelf week. “The whole matter of providing relief for unemployed should be brought before the Government," said Mr Otley. “The Hospital Board simply cannot cope with the position unless the Government* comes to the rescue. The position is certainly not an encouraging one.” ■ It was agreed that the matter of approaching the Government, which now had other matters to occupy its attention, would have to be postponed until after the short session.
