GISBORNE SITTINGS. (Pei United Press Association.) GISBORNE, February 24, In the Supreme Court a verdict o| guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy, was returned on a charge of manslaughter against Adam Te Whetu arising out of a car smash near Taneatua on December 31, when the accused’s companion was killed. Mr Justice MacGregor; sentenced Te Whetu to four months’ imprisonment. Holding at the conclusion of the case for the prosecution that the Crown had not proved its case, Mr Justice MacGregor requested the jury to return a verdict of not guilty on a charge of personation under the Electoral 'Act preferred against Frederick Valentine* veterinary practitioner. The jury gaye its verdict accordingly, PRISONERS SENTENCED, (Peb United Press Association ) GREYMOUTH, February 24. At a sitting of the Supreme Court today the following prisoners were sentenced by Mr Justice Adams: —Albert Amos Rouse, the theft of £651 5s 7d, tha property of the Grey Hospital Board, reformative detention not exceeding three years; Robert Philp, the theft of £"225 5s 3d, the property of the Mokihinui Valley Medical Association, reformative detention not exceeding two years: Frederick Ward Theobald, the theft or £165 9s 6d, the property of the Stockton Colliery Medical and Accident Relief Association, reformative detention not exceeding 18 months. The prisoner in each case had been secretary of the organisation involved. His Honor stated that he could not close his eyes to the fact that such offences were becoming very serious. , .
