SWIMMING

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS FAST TIMES RECORDED ONE TITLE CHANGES HANDS (Pi;r United Press Association.) TIMARU, February 13. The New Zealand senior swimming championships were commenced to-day in brilliant weather before an attendance of 1500. The standard of swimming throughout was exceptionally high and good times were recorded. One title changed hands, this being in the mile, which D. P. Lindsay (Canterbury) defeated the holder, G. Bridson, of Auckland, to break the present official record by 5 l-ssec. Lindsay cut out the distance in 23min 31 3-ssec, thus failing to reach his recent Christchurch performance of just under 23min. Bridson accounted for the 100 Yards in easy fashion and should retain the other short distance titles. The final of the Ladies’ 100 Yards provided a great race. M. Farquhar (Auckland), the holder-, established a lead early, but N. Stratton (Auckland) made a great effort to overtake her. The pair were almost on terms when 75 yards had been covered, but the champion, with a final spurt, gained the decision by a narrow margin.
