Mr Parker, of Magdalen who proposed the abolition, said that the i examination itself was a bad one. There had been a great increase of recent years , in the number of candidates reading for honours, and the increased specialisation made a great demand on the time of those reading tor them. He urged that the examination was in the wrong place in the curriculum, and suggested that scripture might be introduced into the subjects prescribed for Rcsponsions, A suggestion had been made, he added, that the abolition might have a prejudicial effect upon the teaching in public schools ’ but the replies from three headmasters l of large public schools to whom he had ' written showed that the reverse would [ be the case. The statute was an anti- | quated one, and was irritating to undergraduates.
