Shortly before the Maunganui left to-; day for Sydney the Customs officials detained a Hindu passenger who was found, to be in possession of a sum of money, believed to be about £IOO. The regulations provide that a maximum sum of £5 in gold currency may be-ex-f ported from New Zealand with the permission of the collector of Customs, but; for any larger sum the permission of the Minister of Finance must be obtained.:; The Hindu was permitted to leave by the Maunganui, but the gold was detained by the Customs authorities. , It is understood that the man was re*< turning to India, where the English gold sovereign is worth between, 30s and 35a. Last July, the Customs ’officials detained? several persons for attempting both to import Australian silver coins into New, Zealand and to export silver coins from the' Dominion in large quantities both at., Wellington and at Auckland. At Auck-' land the sum of over £IOOO in silver was confiscated and a woman importing silver* was heavily fined. For some time there,, were no further attempts to. evade the regulations in this direction, but it is understood that in recent months the Customs officials at Wellington have eonfis-j eated several small consignments of silver, though until to-day no further at-, tempts had been made to evade the regulations on a large scale.
