LIGHTING THE CLOUDS

PROTEST AGAINST SCHEME

LONDON, January 7,

Mr Lionel Curtis, in a letter, indignantly protests against the proposal to project advertisements in the clouds by “ grid ” searchlight. He asks whether “our common heritage in the glory of the skies shall be handed to a monopolist syndicate for leasing in patches to purveyors of soap, cigarettes, and patent medicines. Surely Parliament will consider the question before the very heavens are prostituted by. advertisements thrown on the clouds. “It will involve the complete vulgarisation of the nation unless it is prevented. This final outrage of commercialism will plaster the skies with advertisements throughout the world, “England may yet save herself and the world by timely exertion, and deserve the motto, * Thou dost preserve the stars from wrong, and the most ancient heavens through Thee are fresh and strong.’ ”
