CLIMBING EXPEDITION
ATTACK ON NANGA * PARBAT PEAK IN THE HIMALAYAS. LONDON, January 14. (Received Jan. 15, at 9 p.m.) The Times says that Mr Francis Smythe, who led the Mount Kamet expedition last year, is forming an expedition to climb Nanga Parbat, 26,624 feet, which dominates the Western Himalayas, and is the sixth highest mountain in the world. The paper recalls the tragedy of 1895, when the alpinist Mummery, after reaching 2.0,000 feet, was killed by an avalanche when crossing a neighbouring pass. Two Gurkhas were also killed.
