THE CASE OF THE CHILDREN
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —I am sure that the hearts of many mothers must ache in sympathy with those who are seeing their children deprived ot food, as so many are at the present time. I have been wondering if a scheme could be formulated whereby those members ot* the Women’s Institute, Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, Church Guild, W.C.T.U., Plunket societies, and the many other women’s organisations who could possibly do, so, would take into their homes one, two, and even in some cases more, little children to assist the mothers. In the country the food problem is not so apparent, and when one is cooking for a household it would not be much extra to cater for, say, two extra children. There are difficulties, I am aware, for very few farm women have much time to spare, yet I think, if only for sake of our country, we could, perhaps, try this. Strong children are an asset to a country and ill-fed children can never be strong. I am not accustomed to newspaper correspondence, and hope that someone more able will take the matter up. I appeal to women to imagine the case of their own children starving.—l am, etc., Mosgiel, January 13. Mother.
