This new exodus is the result of the campaign started against the bookmakers with the coming into operation of the new betting offices to cater for the “ off the course ’’ backer. A limited number of suspects have made their peace with the authorities by signing agreements binding themselves not to follpw the occupation of bookmaker for the rest of their stay in Franco. A new type of backer has been attracted from among those who refrained from betting when unable to go to the course, because they did not care to break the law by patronising bookmakers who were in theory 1 banned by the law.
