PEASANT’S REVENGE
GHASTLY CRIME IN PORTUGAL LISBON, January 0. A seven-fold tragedy occurred in tlie village of Beja, in Southern Portugal, following an accusation of stealing liarley against a farm worker, Antonio Mattes, and his wife. She confessed to the theft, while Mattos denied complicity, but was imprisoned. His wife, fearing her husband’s wrath, strangled herself in prison. Mattos was released after eight weeks, and vowed vengeance. He shot the farmer who had accused him, and the fanner’s mother and brother. Then he retired to his cottage, and, having sent out his seven children, opened a furious lire upon the beseiging police, killing the chief and wounding others. Reinforcements of the Republican Guards, with machine guns, arrived. Mattos sniped the leader and wounded two others. When his cottage was set on (ire, Mattos climbed to the loft and continued to shoot until he was killed by machine gun bullets after a battle of 13 hours.
