ROWING

By Outbiooeb.

FIXTURES January 16.—Otago regatta. January 23.—Wanganui regatta. January 29. Championshop regatta (Hamilton). February 6 Burkes-St.Leonards regatta. February 27.—Otago Association regatta (at Port Chalmers). Jlarch 26.—Inter provincial eights at Picton; Queenstown regatta. OTAGO ASSOCIATION REGATTA It is pleasing to learn that the Otago Rowing Association has decided to hold its annual regatta this year. This has always been a popular fixture with local oarsmen, and if the weather is favourable this year’s fixture should be as successful as those held in the past. The regatta generally attracts crews from Oamaru, ana there may be a possibility of southern oarsmen competing this year. The association at a meeting held at Port Chalmers last Monday night, decided that the regatta would be held on February 27. The association will meet again very shortly to draw up the programme. Trophies to the value of £6O will be ottered ‘for the-various events. QUEEN’S DRIVE PROTEST The Queen’s Drive Club protested to the Otago Rowing Association against the disqualification of the club’s Senior Four at the Macandrew Bay regatta on Boxing Day. The protest was duly considered, and, after discussion, the association decided to receive the letter from the Queen s Drive Club, which means that action could be taken by the controlling body. It is the general opinion that the disqualification must stand, as the Queens Drive crew was in the wrong in crossing the bows of the Port Chalmers crew. It is just possible that the Otago Rowing Association has not been quite fair to its umpires in not providing a launch. It is almost an impossibility to umpire a race from anywhere but behind the crews, and as long as the association makes no arrangements for the umpire to follow the »ace there will be dissatisfaction among the competitors.' The fact that there have !jot previously been any protests made to the association is due more to the good ■tearing on the part of the. coxswains than anything else. It is to be regretted that the Queen’s Drive drew was deprived of this race, as the umpire’s decision is final, and even though the Port Chalmers crew was to blame, as some state, the Drive crew can have no redress. It is to be hoped that the governing body will take steps to prevent a possible recurrence of such incidents by giving the umpires every facility for the proper carrying out of their duties.

PORT CHALMERS REGATTA The Port Chalmers regatta will be the next fixture to claim the attention of Otago oarsmen. This popular regatta will be held on Saturday, January 16. Eowing events will be the feature of the programme. , , j . , The following entries have been received for the various rowisig events: — Youths’ Sculls—Port Chalmers (No. 1 and 2). Already considerable interest is being manifested by northern oarsmen in the championship regatta, and it appears to be the general opinion of writers that there will be some large and representative fields. One writer forecasts a good entry for the senior fours. The juniors in particular are paying close attention to their training. The junior crew won its race by only two feet at the Macandrew Bay Regatta, but the win has acted as a stimulant for a better effort on January 16. The Pi tine brothers will contest the Junior Sculls. This crew competed in the junior event at the Bluff regatta. . „ , „ At last Monday’s meeting of the Otago Eowing Association, it was decided that three rowing events be decided at the Burkes-St. Leonards regatta. The prize money will be divided as follows: —Senior Fours, £3 and £1; Junior Fours, i2 and £1: Youths’ Fours, £1 10s and 10s. The Macandrew Bay Club will be represented in the Youths and Maiden Double Sculls at the Port Chalmers regatta on January 16. The Youths’ crew will comprise R. Timms and W. Poupart, and the Maiden crew will be L. Hellyer and W. Timms. Considerable keenness is being shown by the Macandrew Bay oar~men, and a little improvement by the Youths’ crew on the form shown at the Macandrew Bay regatta may result in the crew being among the placinss. At a recent meeting of the New Zealand Council it was decided that the eightbared boat should be given to the Southland Association with the proviso that the boat will not be used in iuterprovmcial contests until approval is given.
