FIRST DAY’S RESULTS CLARE.'MEMORIAL TO FAIR EXCHANGE. (From Our Special, Reporter.) OMAKAU, January 9. The Vincent Jockey Club’s annual meeting was opened to-day in dull but fine weather. There was a good attendance, and the track was in first-class order. The fields were better than they have been for some years past, and in the case of the Spottis Hack Handicap all the acceptors faced the starter. The totalisator handled £3339, compared with £3875 10s for the first day of last year’s meeting. Results: — OPHIR HACK HANDICAP, Of 55sovs. Six furlongs. 1— Mr H. E. Going down the back Palada ran to the front and led to the far turn and round the top, with Traylavah and Hot Tea next. Coming into the straight Palada was in charge from Genteel and Hot Tea, but at the distance Hot Tea raced up on the outside and went on to win by a length, a similar distance separating Palada and Traylavah. Caterpillar was the first to show out from Dulen, Blue Metal, and Greenaway and as they raced down the back Caterpillar had drawn out to a two lengths’ lead with Dulen, Blue Metal, and Greenaway lying next. The order was unchanged going round the top, and Caterpillar turned for home in front of Blue Metal and Dulen. The leader remained in charge to within 20 yards from the post, where Blue Metal got up to gain the decision by a head. Dulen was a neck away third, and Greenaway was fourth. Time, train 16sec. Druid’s Child and Wyndale were slow to move and Guycara Dillon led Homelight, Lena Bingen, and Mitchie Chimes down the back to the far turn, where Hdmelight drew up and ran to the front with Mitchie Chimes, Love Parade, and Lena Bingen next. Passing the stand the order was Mitchie Chimes. Lena Bingen, Love Parade, Guycara Dillon and Horaelight, with the rest of the field strung out. Going down the back Homelight broke and as they rounded the far turn Mitchie Chimes was in charge from Lena Bingen, Love Parade, and Guycara Dillon. Nearing the entrance to the straight Love Parade ran wide, and as they straightened up for home Mitchie Chimes had a handy lead over Lena Bingen and Guycara Dillon. In the final run Mitchie Chimes drew away to win easily by two lengths. Guycara Dillon was three lengths away. Times, 4min 50sec, 4min 50 2-ssec, 4min 50 4-ssec. Academy and Ballance were the first to show out from a good line, and going down the back this pair were in front of Fair Exchange and My Counsel. At the far turn My Counsel had run into second place with Ballance next and Fair Exchange lying fourth. Academy led Ballance, My Counsel and Fair Exchange round the top and into the straight, but once in line for home Fair Exchange drew up with a great run on the outside and passed the post with a neck to spare. Ballance wag two lengths back and Anne Shakespeare -was fourth. Time, linin 43 4-ssec.

Bellbird jumped out at the rise of the barrier and led Flying Amy, Traylavah and Kipps along the back to the far turn. Bellbird showed the way round the top with Traylavah and Flying Amy close up and Stringbow about a length back, lying fourth. Bellbird led into the straight, but at the distance she was challenged by Traylavah, who stayed on to win by a neck, Stringbow being half a length back. Time, Imin 17 4-ssec.

The field got away to a good line, and passing the stand the first time the order was Huia Nelson, Homelight, Laracor, and Mitchie Chimes, with the rest of the field strung out. Huia Nelson commenced to draw away as they turned out of the straight, and - going down the back she had established a lead of three lengths over the rest of the field. Approaching the far turn, Laracor drew up and showed the way round the top, but at the turn into the straight he was caught by Deste, who came on to win by three lengths, Homelight being 12 lengths away.
