The Christmas number of the Strand Magazine, which contains many illustrations in colour, has more than the usual number of "celebrity” stories and articles. Mr Winston Churchill makes bold prognostications in “ Fifty Years Hence,” further letters of Charles Dickens are published, and lan Hay, P. G. Wodehouse, Gilbert Frankau, May Edginton, de Vere Stacpoole, and “ Sapper ” contribute stories.
H.M.S. Diomede, as we all know, has recently paid a round of visits to New Zealand ports, the crew entertaining and being entertained everywhere en route. In the Diomede Chronicle (Is net) is contained a fully illustrated record of the cruise, in addition to contributions in prose, verse, and India ink by the gifted among the ship’s complement. ' “ Prospects in Canada for British Girls” (Is net) is the report of the English headmistress who toured the Dominion last year. It gives a concise survey of conditions of employment in Canada, and of the many occupations open to women. (From Williams and Norgatc, London.) The Christ’s College Register relates, with numerous illustrations, the events that have taken place at the school in the last term. The record of the sports and of athletic meetings should be of great interest to old boys. “New Zealand: Paradise of the Pacific” is an elaborate Tourist Department brochure depicting in coloured and black and white photographs, with letterpress, the scenic attractions of the Dominion. The part played by electricity in the construction of the Sydney Harbour bridge is commemorated in a well-produced brochure issued by the British General Electric Company, Ltd.
Other Peoples’ Parents Surely after the Forsytes these English families in the earlier part of the twentieth century can be left unprodded for a while (writes Mr Compton Mackenzie, reviewing the latest “ family saga ”). Family portraits are all very well on the walls of the family dining room, but there are comparatively few of them worth public exhibition.
