TROTTING

By Sentinel,

Nominations are due on the 12th for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting. Nominations are due to-day for the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting. There will, as usual, be two trotting races on the final card for the Riverton Racing Club’s meeting. The Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting clashes with the final day of the Wellington Cup meeting, when most of the Canterbury racegoers will be up at Trentham. Nicoya, wiio got amongst the winners at Greymouth, is a six-year-old brother to White Satin. Whatever may be the rights or wrongs of the Ngingongingo case it does not seem right that the accused and the accusers should be bombarded with letters to the press while the case to all intents and purposes has yet to reaob finality. The case created a conflict of opinions between the powers that dealt with the case and now the only possible thing that can be done iu to have the matter fully ventilated. The evidence on which the Appeal Board based its verdict should be published, and so should that supplied to the Trotting Association. The matter cannot possibly rest as it is, and the Auckland Trotting Club owes it as a duty to the sport to give the fullest publicity to the evidence. The leather " number cloths ’ which were tried out at the Oamaru Trotting Chib’s meeting in October, will be used at the Timaru fixture this month. The two clubs have combined to purchase a full outfit of the numbers, which are painted on stiff leather plates which arc strapped on the sulky shafts. The same style of identification is also used by the Wellington Trotting Club, and should be adopted by the Forbury Park Trotting Club instead of the flimsy illegible cloths that flop about and cannot be rend. At their last meeting the committee of the Timaru Trotting Club passed a resolution in favour of the installation of a 5s totalisalor at their summer meeting. The proposal, it is understood, will be dropped in the meantime, owing to there being insufficient time to make the necessary arrangements. Although the imported stallion Llewellyn showed a lot of speed in his races at Addington, he was unreliable in his gait. In the Templeton Handicap, on the first day, be was smartly away and led the field for nearly a round. ( For no apparent reason (says “Argus’) be broke and lost a Jot of ground in the mile and a-half contest. Driven by M, Holmes, he settled down again, went very fast along the back, and finished second, just heating Russell Pointer. Under the circumstances it looked as though he would have troubled Nona Bingen had he kept to Ins gait. He was driven by F. G. Holmes on tlie second day and again was smartly away, but, although he went more steadily than in his first effort, he did not finish as resolutely. It was a very fast race on the second day, and this factor may have accounted for Llewellyn stopping at the finish. The Guy Axworthy pacer is an attractive goer when at his work. Nona Bingen, who won a double at the Canterbury Park meeting, is by Nelson Bingen from Nona Dillon, a marc by the defunct Harold Dillon. She commenced her racing career (says ‘Argus ) as a throe-yenr-old in the season 1028-9, and in her first start was second to Nelson de Oro at the Kurovv meeting- blie was then trained by J. Walsh. Later she went into AV. Jones’s stable at Southland, and at the Gore meeting on Boxing Day beat a fair field in the Christmas Handicap, of a mile ami five furlongs. As a lour-vear-old she started three times without success. Last season Nona Bingen went into E. H. Husband’s stable, and, although she put up some useful performances, she only got into a place once in five starts, finishing second to Some Guy at Ashburton in June, when she went 3mm 21 1-asec for a mile and a-half. After racing unsuccessfully in the early part ot tins season she won the Templeton Handicap on New Year’s Day, covering the mile am a-half in 3rain 24 l-ssee f and accounted for the Prcbblcton Handicap on the second day in the fast time of Jmin IBaec. She is now six years old and, as she appears to be a sound mare, she should go forward to further successes, while she may win a race over two miles, as ’she appears to have plenty of stamina The AVest Australian Trotting Cup, ot £IOOO, is the next important event to be decided at Perth. It will he held in two heats and a final. The deciding race will be participated in by eight horses. J.he scratch markers occupy 2.19 marks; the hardest handicapped candidate is bhcik (72yds bhd), who will start off a 2.13 peg. Tho distance of the race is a mile and

a-half, so qualifying horses will need to run over three miles the same evening. A lot of ante-post betting has taken place on the race, and at the time of writing the horses who are sought after are Findon Derby, Roy Medlow, Glen Brick, Royal Again, Tommy Dillon, and Canton. Roy Medlow captured the last Metropolitan Handicap, of two miles, at a 2.18 J rate in brilliant style. The exNew Zealand pacer, Tommy Dillon, is on a 2.16 J mark this year. He won last year at a 2.154 rate from a 2.17-i mark. No horse has won the race twice. He recently covered the Cup distance at a 2.1 li rate in training, the last mile in 2.94, and the intermediate half at a 2.8 rate. He will probably be asked to record a 2.12 rate to win this year, as lindon Derby for one hag four seconds up his sleeve. At a recent meeting the Globe Derby stallion finished in a place at a 2.14. J rate. He is on a 2.18 i mark.
