OTTAWA CONFERENCE
THE PRELIMINARY WORK OF A COMPREHENSIVE NATURE. LONDON, December 29. Apparently there is little prospect of fulfilment of Mr Thomas’s recently-ex-pressed hope that the Ottawa Conferencewould be held slightly earlier. Preparation is proceeding on the assumption that it will begin about the end of July. The conference will probably last many weeks. The only chance of completing it in a reasonable period is to make the preliminary work as comprehensive as possible. In this connection the Dominions Office Committee is working out details of the effect of possible British preference on the produce of the dominions, including the question of the price to consumers. It is hoped that later preliminary discussions with the dominions’ representatives in London will help to clarify the task, which is naturally heavy.
