MACANDREW BAY REGATTA The Macandrew Bay Regatta Committee is to be complimented on the splendid success attending its efforts on Boxing Day. The regatta was carried through without a hitch, the general arrangements for the fixture being such that protracted delays were refreshingly absent, and the various events were disposed of as expeditiously as possible. These factors, allied to the excellent weather conditions, made the regatta one of the most enjoyable fixtures ever held at Macandrew Bay. Under the leadership of the commodore (Mr W. 11. Riddell) the officials worked together harmoniously during the day, the result of this co-operation being the excellent despatch with which the events were decided. The handicappers did their work well, although the action of some of the limit boats in one of the yacht events, which did not get away when their signal was given, nullified the efforts of the bandicappcr (Mr F. Percy) in this event. Mr J. H. Barton, the motor boat handicapper, however, was favoured with better fortune, the result . being that all the power boat events provided interesting races. The starters (Messrs W. B. Robinson, R. Hcllyer, and A. Challis, jun.) and the judges (Mr A. Challis, sen., and Captain Nicholas) carried out their onerous duties to the satisfaction of all, whilst the secretary (Mr C. J. Hook) and his assistant (Mr R. H. Ross) did much to assist competitors and officials during the day. The committee’s thanks arc due to the members of the Otago Rowing Association for their valuable services during the day and also all those competitors who helped to make the day such an unqualified success. Through the generosity of Mr R. Percy the Orphanage Boys’ Band, which provided an enjoyable musical programme during the afternoon, was granted a delightful outing. Mr Percy placing his large launch at the disposal of the band and conveying it to and from the regatta. In the contest for 12ft 6in dinghies, the Frolic, Good Luck, and Harlequin were unfortunately too late on the scene to start, the Lone Star sailing round the coui'se alone. The committee has decided that the three boats will be given a race on Saturday, when the club will hold the Elliott Cup race and the sweepstake for motor boats. The Elliott Cup is at present held by Ivan M'Grath’s 14-footer Winifred. The regatta dance held on Saturday evening was unquestionably the best function of the series held at Macandrew Bay, the capacity of the hall being taxed to its uttermost. At an interval in the dance tfie commodore presented the trophies won during the regatta, the great majority of the winners being present to take possession of their prizes. BROAD BAY NOTES Very good entries have been received for the Broad Bay regatta to-morrow and all arrangements for the convenience of visiting yachtsmen and the general public have been finalised, with the result that an excellent day’s entertainment is assured. Mr J. Hudson, accompanied by Messrs T. Brooks and J. Potter, is setting out on a cruise in his launch Tuatea on Saturday. The cruise will probably include Timaru and Akaroa and other east coast ports. The launch Laura, which was badly damaged during the heavy gale a few weeks ago, is now being repaired and will probably be seen afloat later in the season. PORT CHALMERS REGATTA The programme for the Port Chalmers regatta, wmich will be held on January 16, was approved at the last meeting of the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association. Entries for the regatta will close on January 5.
