UNEMPLOYED RELIEF All persons requiring ■ meat under the unemployed relief are .notified that there ■will be a free issue' of,meat at the Tees *treet shop (the old. depot) on Thursday, commencing at 9 a.m. This has been made possible by the free issue of 30 carcasses of mutton to Oamaru by the. Government, through the Health Department. . All persons'applying are required to furnish .their own wrapping material. Last week -£219 Os 6d was paid out in wages to 142 ; relief workers by the Oamaru Borough Council. This was £SO above the average payments, and was made possible through the extra allocation to the district from the Unemployment Board. There are no relief works in hand this week, but they will’be resumed next week, for which; it'is understood, the allocation will be reduced. FIRST OFFENDER ‘ CONVICTED At a sitting of the Police Court yesterday ■ morning, before Mr W. S. Crombie, J.P., a first offender was convicted of drunkenness and discharged. KAKANUI RIFLE CLUB The Kakanui Miniature Rifle Club concluded its activities for '■ the season by holding ,a very successful, dance in the Athenaeum Hall. The,trophies won during the year were presented by the president (Mr R. llapson, sen.). Mr W. Cooper .’ (patron of the club) thanked those present for, their attendance and the interest■ they..had shown in the club,, and gave a brief survey of its’doings'! during the year. _ . SUMMER SCHOOL The students attending the summer •chool held by the W.E.A. at the Waitaki Boys’ High School are spending a delightful time, and all are entering into the various functions with enthusiasm. The lectures given by the various speakers so far have proved very interesting and instructive. On Monday evening the students assembled -in the gymnasium, where a very enjoyable time was spent. Those present indulged in community singing, while monologues and a clog dance were niueh appreciated. A play entitled “The Old Lady Shows Her Medals” (J. M.- Barry) was staged by the Dunedin W.E.A. Drama Club, and thoroughly enjoyed by the audience. The performers acted their parts to perfection, and were accorded hearty applause. Folk dancing I was indulged in by all present, and this j item caused a good deal of merriment.' | Mr G. Manning, general secretary of the ] W.E.A., is to be congratulated on the manner in which ho organised the evening's entertainment, and was ably assisted by - Miss Gwen. Rankin, who is in charge of the folk dancing. Mr Lloyd Ross took the first of a series of four lectures on “Rationalisation and Unemployment,” and Mr F. Milner dealt with the world situation. I RURAL MAIL DELIVERY j The chief postmaster has advised that from January 1 the mails for the rural j boxholders on the Hakataramea-Four-Mile Gate rural delivery will be made up at j the Kurow' Post Office. At present they are made up at the Hakataramea Post I Office, but the alteration provides an improvement in the service, as it enables the time for departure to be delayed until 9.15 a.m., which will permit the mail from Oamaru to connect. The postal and telephone facilities at Hakataramea will not be affected in any way, and the alteration will apply only to the boxholders on the rural delivery in question.

Deep regret was felt by the many friends of Mrs A. J. Grave at the news of her death at Hamner Springs on Monday night, after a serious illness. Mrs Grave was a very well known and highly esteemed resident in Oamaru, and much sympathy is felt for Mr Grave and the relatives in their sad loss. NORTH OTAGO CALEDONIAN SOCIETY A meeting of directors of the North Otago Caledonian Society was held last night. Mr J. Gerrie occupied the chair. The tender of S. Dick for the catering at the sports was accepted, i The secretary was empowered to arrange for timekeepers. Mr G. Ross (Palmerston) was appointed judge of the piping events, to start at 12.30. The athletic events would be commenced at 1 o’clock to enable the sports to be finished at 4.15. Mr J. Fiddes, on behalf of the Athletic and Cycling Club, thanked the directors for their assistance in preparing the track for evening' sports.—Mr D. Burns Acknowledged the club’s co-operation with, and assistance to. the society. The Highland Pipe Band accepted an invitation to be present at the sports. The financial statement of the Papakaio cycle road race was submitted, showing a favourable credit balance; ■ i The Otago Centre of the Piping and Dancing Association advised that Messrs A. Wheeler, G. Gerrie, and W. Gerrie had been appointed the society’s delegates to the centre. Silver and gold medals were received from .anonymous ‘ donors for competition among those who had never won a first prize in the Highland fling section, and it was decided to award money for second and third prizes. It was decided to request the St. John Ambulance Brigade to be in attendance at the sports. The appointment of an announcer t was left in the hands.of a sub-committee.
