TELEPHONE COMEDY
LABOUR PARTY SURPRISED WRONG NUMBER AGAIN. The headquarters of the Labour Party in London was surprised recently by a telephone call from Mr Montagu Norman, of the Bank of England. Three officials of the party were seated in a room discussing the political situation with a reporter, talking of the “ bankers v. the people propaganda when the call came through. An official lifted the receiver with a casual “Hullo.” His face blanched, his hand holding the receiver trembled, - and in a husky voice he repeated Mr Norman, the Bank of England? . Ihe caller confirmed, and the official moistened his lips and muttered, Please land the A senior official took over the instrument, and, after an inquiry, his features registered agitation and amazement, xes, it was the flank of England, and it was Mr Norman. “What do you want? he asked eventually. The question was answered with another of “That is the India Office, isn t it 9 ” Enlightenment spread over the official’s face and his tone changed. No, he said. “ This is the Labour Party s headThere was a metallic laugh from the Bank of England; the line was cleared; and Labour headquarters returned to normal. , , , The telephone number of the Trades Union Council, which is the Labour Party headquarters, is Victoria 9820; the telephone number of the India Office is Victoria 8920.
