MOTHERLY INSTINCTS

GLASGOW’S YOUNG GIRLS. This city must surely take the palm for its “ little mothers.” That is the opinion voiced by a woman social worker who recently went from England to live in Glasgow. Her deepest impression of the Clyde; side' city is of the motherly instincts of its young girls. . “ Even in the manufacturing towns ot the Midands,” the woman said, “ where so many women go out to work in the mills and factories, and girls have of necessity to mother the younger members of the family, I never saw so much of that as I have seen in the poorer districts of Glasgow. But what strikes me even more than their numbers is the naturalness of the mothering done by these little girls. ... “To see them in the park or on the street, each with a kiddie in a shawl, and to see what I slioiild call the expertness of their handling of the child, you would think they were real mothers. “ Another aspect of this matter,” the woman added, “ is that actually, I think, there must bo more married girls under or just over 20 with children in Glasgow than in most cities. Marrying young seems to be very prevalent among all classes in Glasgow, even in 'these hard times.”
