CHRISTMAS PERIOD The Christmas period passed off very quietly at Port Chalmers, but everyone appeared to enjoy the festive season. The shops did a brisk trade on Christmas Eve, and the residents greatly appreciated the appearance of the Port Chalmers Brass Band, which played an 4 enjoyable programme, including appropriate numbers, in the rotunda in King Edward square. On Sunday, Christmas services were held in the various churches and by the Salvation Army. The choral singing was an outstanding feature of all the services. The pleasant weather yesterday brought most of the residents away from their homes. A number visited Portobello and other bays on the north-east side of the harbour, while others journeyed to the Spit. ' •
