RADIO BROADCASTING

ATTEMPT ON SPEED RECORD DESCRIPTION TO BE RELAYED. (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, December 28. One of the most important broadcasting efforts to be undertaken by the Broadcasting Board in the New Year will be a description of Mr Norman Smith’s attempt to break the land speed record at Ninety Mile Beaclq North Auckland. Arrangements for this have already been made by the board. A portable transmitter will be placed on the beach, which is some distance from Kaitaia, and a receiver will be installed at the Kaitaia Post Office. The description will then be relayed by land line to IYA Auckland and 2YA Wellington. Should the time be suitable and the lines available, a relay will be sent also to 3YA Christchurch and 4YA Dunedin. The first meeting of the board has been held in Wellington. Mr' H. D. Vickery, of Wellington, chairman, presided and the other members present were Messrs G. R. Hutchinson, of Auckland, and R. R. C. Macfarlane, of Canterbury. Questions of immediate interest were dealt with, and, as previously indicated, practically the whole of the Radio Broadcasting Company’s staff will be taken over by the board. It is stated that some alterations in the staff may be made at a later date. As stated, the board’s head office will be in Wellington, the present head office staff being moved , from Christchurch. It will be accommodated on the ground floor of the 2YA studio in Featherston street. Comment has been created in the past concerning the centralisation of control at Christchurch, and complaints have been made that this has tended to rob the station directors of initiative. It is likely that in - future a policy of decentralisation will be adopted, and that where circumstances warrant it the individual stations will be encouraged to show greater initiative than has been possible under the policy followed.
