The death is announced of Mr Mauice Greiffenhagen, the well-known British artist, at the’age of 68. >•; ; , t As a painter Mr Greiffenhagen was very susceptible to outside influences so that there was no marked development a style of his oWn, but he used rich colours and aimed at decorative effedts. His . first notable Academy picture wag “ An Idyll,” now in the Liverpool gallery, a shepherd embracing a girl ; in a poppy-clad meadow, in which the pre-Raphaelite influence is seen. In 1896 he showed a “ Judgment of Paris ” (Sydney). His “Annunciation,” exhibited at Munich in 1889, is of the Rosetti type, as is the “Pool of Bethesda” (1927), while “ the Sons of God Looked on the j Daughters of Men,” now at Ghent, be- f longs to the Venetian school. “Women by a Lake” and “Dawn” were' bought by the Chantry Trustees for the Tate Gallery. ’ 'ln 1925' Mr Greiffenhagen executed historical panels for the j Paris - and Dunedin Exhibitions. He was often represented at Continental shows. Atj Munich in 1897 and at Dresden in 1901/ he won gold medals. ‘ ( MR JAMES QUINN; The death occurred at Greymouth on Saturday, 1 as a result of heart failure, pf Mr James Quinn, a widower, aged 62. Mr Quinn was entering his car to go to the Hokitika races when ,he Suddenly collapsed. He was for 28 years with the State Coal Mines Department, being stationed at different periods at Dunedin, Wellington, Wanganui, and Christchurch. He retired three years ago on account of ill-health. Mr Quinn spent seven years in South Africa, where he participated in the Jameson Raid.
