While a Union Jack flared defiance to flames which shone far over the Channel, - 100 disconsolate guests faced a gloomy dawn watching the destruction of the east wing of St. Austell’s Bay Hotel, Corn- 1 wall. Many of those who were thus dispossessed usually stay at the Riviera, but patriotism prompted them to remain ' .In England to spend Christmas, their reward being the destruction of everything but what they stood up in. This was not much because many escaped in their night clothes, sliding down waterpipes. Four fire brigades were soon fighting the flames amid dftnse smoke, while the guests shivered on chairs or settees dragged out by the firemen. The hotel was erected in 1930 in record time, and will be renovated immediately.
