PANAMA CANAL TRAFFIC. * The volume of cargo passing through the Panama canal during the fiscal year ended June SO last showed a very heavy decline from that of the preceding year, the individual totals of certain commodities falling to a lower level than has been reached for some years past. The total movement was 25,082,800 tons, compared with 30,030,232 tons In 1930 and 30,633,006 tons In 1929, decreases of 30 and 32 per cent, respectively. The volume carried from the Atlantic to the Pacific was the lowest for any fiscal year since 1922, when 5,495,934 tons were returned. Of the 18 different commodities moving In this direction, cotton was the only one to register an Increase, viz., 50,532 tons, or 20.3 per cent, more than in 1930. The principal item, as usual, was iron and steel manufactures, which accounted for 19.8 per cent, of the westbound consignments, but in actual tonnage there was a decline of 808,621 tons, or 38 per cent, in comparison with the previous year. f Cargoes from the Pacific to the Atlantic were nearly three times as great as those in the other direction, ‘ the decrease being relatively smaller. Of the 21 classes of goods, 14 showed Increases, as the result of which the total was only 2,152,130 tons, or 10.5 per cent, lower than in 1930. Mineral oils maintained the lead which they established in 1923, aggregating 4,824,338 tons, a decrease of 876,249 tons, or 15.4 per cent. Lumber was the second largest commodity, though here, again, the returns have fallen by 783,394 tons, or 22.2 per cent., to 2,747,485 tons. One notable revival was In the movement of wheat, which rose from the, fifth to Hhe third place in the list, surpassing the shipments of both ores and nitrates. This was achieved by an additional transit of 359,112 tons, or 23.9 per cent., whereas the two other commodities mentioned fell by 35.6 and 28 per cent, respectively.
