PLUNKET SHIELD

OTAGO v. CANTERBURY VISITORS’ MODERATE SCORE DISMISSED FOR 161 RUNS (Per United Pbess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 25. The Pluuket Shield match between Canterbury and Otago was commenced at Lancaster Park this afternoon. Otago won the toss and batted on a perfect and fast wicket. The weather was fine, with a brisk nor’-west wind. Badcock and Cherry opened for Otago against the bowling of Cromb and Burrows. Cromb kept the batsmen quiet, but Badcock found Burrows easy and the first two overs cost 16 runs. Talbot took over the bowling at Burrows’s end with the total at 21. Cromb was bowling splendidly, keeping a good length and maintaining his pace well, lu his fifth over he clean bowled Badcock. 25 —I—l 9.1 —19. Blunt joined Cherry at the crease, but in Talbot’s next over Cherry flicked a rising off ball and Hamilton held the catch. Priest, the next man, was clean bowled by Talbot before he had scored. Knight joined Blunt, and the two resisted the bowling successfully. Blunt gave a chance to the wicket-keeper off Cromb, which was missed, but later he was badly heaten by a ball which just missed the wicket. Merritt now relieved Cromb, who had bowled for an hour for 12 runs. Blunt gave another possible chance to second slip when his total was 13. Merritt puzzled Knight badly, but the ball always missed the stumps. Talbot came on in place of Lester, and the runs continued to come slowly, though both batsmen played the bowling confidently and correctly. Cromb came on again in place of Merritt, and broke the partnership when Blunt cut a high ball to Kerr at point. 94 —4 —32. Smith filled the vacancy, and had the honour of bringing the 100 up in an hour and 40 minutes. Burrows and Cromb bowled after the tea adjournment, Cromb bowling with the wind, which had increased in force, behind him. The last ball of his first over beat Knight. 108—5—38. Dunning, the next man, scored 9 runs flukily before giving a chance to Hamilton at second slip. _ 119—6—9. Moloney and Smith carried the score to 126, when Merritt, who had replaced Burrows, bowled Smith round his legs. 120—7—11. Coupland partnered Moloney, but the latter, after being sadly puzzled by Merritt, was clean bowled with a leg break. 138—8—5. Elmes joined Coupland, but the latter went out Ibw to Cromb, who had replaced Talbot, and Hawkesworth and Elmes, by % succession of singles, brought up 160 before Hawkesworth went out Ibw to Burrows.

After the match against Wellington, Hamilton will return south, and he will be replaced by another player, yet to be chosen. AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON POOR SCORE BY FORMER. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, December 25. The Plunket Shield cricket match between Auckland and Wellington commenced this afternoon, when some dreary cricket was seen. Heavy rain during mid-week had given a bit of a bite to the wicket, and a stiff northerly wind further assisted the bowlers. Auckland had to scratch hard for runs all the afternoon, and eventually managed to total 164. The northerners found the bowling of J. Newman and M'Girr, both of whom took four wickets, too good for them, Wellington in 20 minutes lost one wicket for 13 runs. Scores:— AUCKLAND. First Innings.
