The following satisfaetpry reply has been received from the Minister of Labour (Mr S. G. Smith) “ I havri to advise you that it was ngver intended that scheme No. 4B should be curtailed in any way. Applications for development work to be carried out by subsidised labour on a' contract basis are still being dealt with under this scheme. The future position of scheme No. 4A has, however, been considered by the Unemployment Board, and it baa been decided that the suspension of the scheme should operate for one month only. In resuming the scheme a b from October 1, special precautions are being taken to ensure that the work carried out is of a developmental nature only, and the labour engaged is additional to that which would otherwise be employed. This decision does not affect existing contracts which extend into or beyond the period of suspension. Such agreements are being allowed to continue for the full term agreed upon. Local committees have been acquainted with the board’s decision, and advised that applications for farm labour under the scheme may again be accepted, but that the subsidy payable by the Unemployment Board will not commence until October 1,1931.” WORK AT DEEP STREAM - The district public works engineer (Mr T.
