THE HANKOW FLOODS
A GHASTLY LEGACY THOUSANDS OF CORPSES. SHANGHAI, September 2. Hopes are being held out that the Yangtse River will return to its normal level in three weeks’ time. Firms whose buildings have not collapsed are endeavouring to resume business on the upper floors, It is estimated that 10 days of pumping will be necessary to drain the business district of Hankow. Elaborate preparations are in progress to combat epidemics. Thousands of corpses and carcasses are being exposed as the water subsides.
