BOXING

MILITARY TOURNAMENT CONCLUDED BEST BOXER W. MURPHY The military boxing tournament conducted by Area XI A was concluded in the Drill Hall last night before a large attendance of- spectators. Some clever, willing bouts were seen, the standard set on the two previous nights being fully maintained, and credit must be given to the members of the permanent staff for the manner in which the arrangements over the whole of the tournament were carried out. W. Murphy, the winner of the territorial welter-weight section, received the wrist watch presented by Calder Mackay, Ltd., for the best boxer, his display all through being a 'very fine one. The Otago Boxing Association’s medal for the most scientific boxer went to W. Cole, ahd W. Grant won Captain D. G, G. Hunter’s trophy for the best loser. During the evening exhibition bouts were fought by Bert Lowe (the New Zealand amateur welternveight champion) and W. Murphy, and by Tommy Griffiths and Charlie Buckley. The referees were Messrs Don Paterson, R. Fulcher, and A. W. Macdonald, and the judges were Messrs H. Bowie, R. Fulcher, W. Wilson, and S. Brown. The following are the results of the contests: — TERRITORIAL SECTION. MIDDLE-WEIGHT. Final. Private Gamble 11.8 beat Reservist Henry 10.9. Gamble scored early with lefts to the head, while Henry did most of the covering up. Gamble continued to hold the advantage in the second round, when he used a damaging uppercut and hefty body jabs. Henry rallied in the third, but it. was too late. WELTER-WEIGHT. Private Dick 9.12 beat Private Conder 10.0, Dick had the better of the opening stages, using a solid right to the head, and rights and lefts to the body. Conder scored with a right, but Dick’s performance was consistently superior. Final, Private Murphy 9.12 beat Private Dick 9.12. Murphy soon had Dick groggy, and in tho first round knocked him out with a left to the body atd‘a right to the chin. LIGHT-WEIGHT. Final. Private Montgomery 0.7 beat Private Grant 9.5. Honours were fairly even in the first round, but in the second Grant landed blow after blow on Montgomery’s face. Both men were weak in the third, but they fought all the time. It was one of the best bouts of the evening. FEATHER-WEIGHT, Private Gladwin 9.0 beat Private Craik 8.8. _ Both men scored in the first round with rights to the face. Gladwin forced the pace in the second,, and sent Craik down for eight, with a right and a left to the jaw. The gong saved him. He was still groggy in the third, when the referee stopped the fight. BANTAM-WEIGHT. Final. Private Morgan-Batten 8.0 beat Private Peoples 8,2 by default. CADET SECTION. MIDDLE-WEIGHT. Final. Cadet Burnside 11.0 beat Cadet Meehan 10.7. Burnside opened promisingly, but he allowed Meehan to do most of the early forcing- In the second round he sent Meehan to the mat, and the referee stopped the fight, WELTER-WEIGHT. Final, • Cadet Arnott 9.13 beat Cadet Morrison 9.10. Morrison started well with tights and lefts to the head, but Arnott had a solid body jab that proved troublesome to his opponent. Arnott frequently had Morrison groggy in the second, using rights and lefts to the Head, and in the third continued to such good effect • that the referee stopped the fight. LIGHT-WEIGHT. Cadet Rutherford 8.9 beat Cadet Idour 9,3. Idour was knocked out in the first round after a stormy start, when both went twice to the mat, Final. Cadet de Cotircey 9.3 beat Cadet Wells 9.3, i De Courcey knocked Wells out in tho first round. FEATHER-WEIGHT. Cadet Eustace 8.12 beat Cadet Loughrea 8.7. Eustace won on a technical knock-out in the first round, He was all over his opponent. Cadet Brooke (0.0) beat Cadet King (8.12). King scored early with a left to the head, and a strong- body jab. Much wild punching and pushing marked the second round, the advantage being slightly with Brooke. Early in the third Kinp: stopped a left to the jaW and dropped like a log. Brooke won on a knock out. Final. Cadet Eustace (8.12) beat Cadet BfoOke (9.0) The first round was fairly even, but towards the end of the second Eustace had Brooke groggy with body and head 'punches. Both men punched vigorously m the third, with Eustace holding the upper hand. BANTAM WEIGHT. ! , Final. Cadet Brosnan (8.4) beat Cadet Hay (8.6). Brosnan had the advantage in reach, and bad easily the better of the early exchanges. He continued Well, using solid body punches and a punishing uppercut. PLY-WEIGHT. Final, Cadet Anderson (8.0) beat Cadet Wilson (8.0) Anderson had the better of the early exchanges with a punishing right to the body and a left to the face. He continued those tactics into t the second round, and in the third was still definitely superior, PAPER-WEIGHT. Final. Cadet Buckley 7.4 beat Cadet Bunting 7.0. Buckley scored early with rights to the head, and continued into the second round using the same hit, allowing his opponent to do most of the forcing. Very little hitting was done in the third round. GNAT-WEIGHT. Final. Cadet Mansoor 6.7 defaulted to Cadet Cole 6.13. SHADOW-WEIGHT. Final, Cadet Pauli 6.0 beat Cadet Bunting 6.3. Pauli displayed better ringcraft, and in the second round had Bunting on the ropes for a long time. In the third round he planted solid lefts on his opponent’s face. Bunting, however, frequently scored at long range. SPLINTER-WEIGHT. Pinal. Cadet Arab 5.8 defaulted to Cadet Drew 5.8. PENNY-WEIGHT, Final. Cadet ViHeatra 5.5 beat Cadet Louell 4.12 by default.
