UNEMPLOYED SINGLE MEN
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—“ Hyacinth ” , has drawn attention to the need of cheap board for single men and relief workers. I would direct his attention to the fact that at the Workmen’s.. Home, Maclaggan street, the Salvation Atmy 'offers all he desires in this direction.
Recognising that men. working on the No. 5 scheme are unable to pay standard rates for board and lodgings, the Salvation Army has met their need by reducing its ordinary rates to 12s a week, for which are two hot meals, lunch for the men when they, are working, and sleeping accommodation.
During the stand-down period or while men have been waiting for the allotment of work, free' meals and beds have been provided to all who needed them so that no man should go without, help. As an indication of what has been done during the April-July period (four months) it may be stated that the Workmen's Home has provided 9704 meals for relief workers and unemployed men, of which 6597 were free, and 6255 beds, of which 3829 were free.—l am, etc., . B. Thomson, Manager S.A. Workmen’s Horae.
