WIGHTMAN CUP CONTEST MISS JIUDFORD DEFEATED. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) ' NEW YORK, August 7. At the Westside lawn tennis courts, Forest Hills, to-day in the Wightman Cup Mrs Helen Wills Moody defeated Miss Mudford, 6—l, 6—4, before 5()00 spectators. ' Miss Mudford _ seemed* stage-struck .at the outset, and hit wildly against Mrs Moody’s well-timed drives. She rallied in the second set to score on a break through Mrs Moody’s service, and gave a> splendid account of herself in a series of hard-fought baseline duels. Mrs Moody played confidently, but was frequently forced to scramble for Miss Mudford’s flying shots to corners. MISS ROUND BEATEN. NEW YORK, August 7. (Received August 9, at 5.5 p.m.) Mrs Harper defeated Dorothy Round in a marathon match of almost two hours,’6—3, 4—6, 9—7. Miss Round had set point five times in the third set, but Mrs Harper rallied. United States requires only one victory in Saturday’s four matches to win the trophy. MISS NUTHALL BEATEN. NEW YORK, August 7. At Forest Hills Miss Helen Jacobs had a surprise victory over Miss Betty Nuthall by B—6, 6—4. Miss Jacobs made a sensational comeback to chop-stroke her way to triumph after dropping the first four games. She exhibited superb control after steadying down, whereas Miss Nuthall, after a characteristic start, wilted under the tense heat. AMERICA REGAINS THE CUP. NEW YORK, August 8. (Received August 9, at 8 p.m.) At Forest Hills the United States regained the Wightman Cup on Saturday, Miss Helen Jacobs defeating Miss Phyllis Mudford, 6 —4, 6—2. Miss Mudford’s service was highly effective, 'but she could not compete with Miss Jacobs’s backhand drives. Miss Mudford rapidly tired under the extreme heat. Mrs' Helen Wills Moody defeated Miss Betty Nuthall, 6—4, 6—2, before a gallery of 8000. Miss Nuthall began briskly by taking four straight points for the opening game, but Mrs Moody broke through her service in the third for a two to one lead, but was outstroked in the fourth, and lost her own delivery. Miss Nuthall failed to score a point in the sixth game, and then double faulted three times, and never seemed to recover from it. BRITAIN WINS THE DOUBLES. NEW YORK, August 8. (Received August 9, at 8 p.m.) At Forest Hills Airs Shepherd and Aliss Mudford defeated Airs Hazel Wightman and Aliss Sarah Palfrey, 6—4. 10—8; Aliss Nuthall and Airs Whittingstall defeated Airs Aloody and Airs Harper, B—6, 5 —7, 6—3.
