UNEMPLOYMENT

RELIEF OF DISTRESS ACTIVITIES IN THE CITY ST. ANDREW STREET DEPOT The officials at the St. Andrew Street Depot are very grateful for the practical interest taken by the West Harbour Borough Council. The pound-a-week scheme which the council has started will be of great assistance. Arrangements have made for the men from Ravensbourne to receive an . order from the Mayor (Mr T. Harridge) before coming to the St. Andrew Street Depot. The following donations are acknowledged with thanks: — Mrs Armstrong, Royal terrace* (butter); J. G. B. (one ton ooal); Women’s Institute, Roxburgh (one sheep); A. ST. KILDA AND PORTOBELLO STATEMENT BY DEPOT WORKERS. The officials at the St. Andrew street depot are at a loss to understand the attitude of the, St. Kilda Council and the Peninsula County Council. Their remaiks that men had been turned away were unjust, according to the depot workers. As a matter of fact, the men from these districts were receiving, in many cases, double the amount of the city men, because', owing to lack of work, their need ■of assistance was greater. Men were coming into the depot from as far down the harbour as Portobello, the depot workers stated, and as the Peninsula County Council was evidently not attending to the needs of these men, they were forced to come into the city. Perhaps some residents could take the matter up and organise relief nearer home, as the bus fare alone was a serious item to tne people in distress. So far as St. Kilda was concerned, Mr Beattie called at the depot some five wccks ago and was shown the system on which the depot worked, taking away one of the registration cards. It was understood from him that something would be done for the St. Kilda men. From information received a few days ago it was understood that the St. Kilda residents at the ot Clair end were sending in their_ weekly donations with those from,St, Clair. .The depot was very grateful to receive these, but they went a very small way towards helping the St. Kilda men, who were more urgently in need of assistance than the citv men. If the St. Andrew street depot was expected to carry the full burden then the St. Kilda Council must do its share towards assisting _in the same planner: otherwise the would become impossible. SALVATION ARMY DEPOT The Salvation Army relief depot, which has been operating in Dowling street under the supervision of the Samaritan, officer (Adjutant V. Wood), is continuing to do excellent work. Each week there are distributions of groceries, firing, and clothing, special days being allocated for the handling of the different classes of goods. Tins month the workers bad a particularly heavy, time, and 1364 people were assisted. Adjutant Wood states that they were considerably assisted by the commercial travellers, organisers of the recent cash, food, and clothes drive, and for this help they are extremely grateful. A large quantity of groceries is bought in bulk and distributed, but friends of the Army help from time to time with donations. Groceries are given out on Fridays and Saturdays. POUND-A-WEEK SCHEME Mr Chave, at the corner of Moray place and Filleu 1 street, has offered his shop as a receiving depot. Mr Hunter has offered hie store in Kaikorai for the same purpose. Mr Hunter has also kindly offered to supply a carrier to convey goods to the St. Andrew street depot. Mrs Black is, hoping to start the-pound-a-week scheme in Kaikorai next week. Mr M-'Kay, carrier, Taimu, has kindly offered to bring in the goods from that district to the St. Andrew street depot. The Guides, Scouts, and schoolboys are showing great enthusiasm in their job ot collecting each week. On Saturday morninc three Arthur Street School boys arrived at the St. Andrew street depot with their load from Lower York place mrd Rattray street, and they were indeed proud of their lorry, which they had made themselvea-Tor the purpose.
