What is this Rationalism ? ’’ Rationalism." You have doubtless heard the word used. Do you know what It means? According to the definition adopted by the Rationalist- Press Association Rationalism is: " Tlie mental attitude which unreservedly accepts the supremacy of reason and alms at establishing a system of philosophy and ethics verifiable by experience and Independent of all arbitrary assumptions or authority.” Its essence is expressed in Professor Huxley’s dictum: " It is wrong for a man to say that lie Is certain of the objective truth of any proposition unless he can produce evidence which logically justifies that certainty." A Rationalist (or Agnostic), therefore; (1) docs not believe In a personal God, or, Indeed, in -any of the “ gods " that have been so far “ revealed." (2) does not believe in a Heaven or a Hell; nor profess to know what, if anything, lies “ beyond the veil.” (3) does not claim to know anything about the " ultimate realities,” as c.g., the purpose of life or the why and wherefore of the universe. Ho maintains that nothing Is known about these matters; and where nothing Is known. It Is best to admit the fact and keep an open mind. If you want to know more of Rationalism, read: Vivian Phelips’s “ Churches and Modern Thought.” Sir Leslie Stephen’s* “ Agnostic’s Apology.” Sir G. Greenwood’s " Faith of an Agnostic.” A. G. Whyte's “ Religion of the Open Mind.” Hon. John Collier’s “ Religion of an Artist.” Sir Arthur Keith’s “ Darwinism and Whftt it Implies.” T. H. Huxley’s “ Lectures and Essays.” Particulars of these volumes, and of the Association that Issues them, may be obtained from the R.P.A. Local Secretary in Dunedin, E. W.
