PALMERSTON NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, July 17. PALMERSTON “ SARAVATI ” CLUB. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston “ Saravati ” Club was held on Wednesday night, July 8, at the residence of the president of the club (Mrs J. W. Sutherland), lucre was a large attendance of over 30 members. The programme commenced with a pianoforte duet, “Gigue in G,” by Misses U, Thompson and H, Lang, which was followed by pianoforte solos by Misses D. Whittleston and C. M'Gregor. The remainder of the programme was in the form of a Scottish entertainment. A few explanatory remarks by Miss A. Corson preceded each item. “ Hunting Tower,” rendered as a vocal duct by Miss 0, Bennet and Miss E. Brown, opened this portion of the programme, which was followed by " Bonnie Prince Charlie,” sung by the Glee Party; “John Anderson My Jo,” solo by Mrs Wedge; “The Bonnie, Bonnie Banks o’ Loch Lomond,” solo by Mrs J. W. Sutherland; “The Skye Boat Song,” chorus by High School girls; “ Caller Herrin’.” solo by Miss E. Brown; “ The Auld House,” solo by Miss O. Bennett; “ Hame o’ Mine,” solo by Mrs W. Crockett; “ Blue Bells of Scotland ” and “Robin Adair,” by the Glee Party; “Annie Laurie,” solo by Mrs G. B. Smith; pianoforte solo,' “Coronach” (Highland Lament), by Miss M. Stent; “Ye Banks and Brnesi” vocal duet by Misses Corson and Bennett; Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Requiem,” solo by Mrs G. B. Smith; and the “Eriskay Love Lilt,” solo by Miss O. Bennett. The accompanist was Miss R. Morrison. The programme was completed with a musical competition supplied by Miss I, Lang and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne,” in which all present took part. The “ Saravati " Club had its sixth birthday on June 11, and has grown, since its formation iu 1925, from a membership of 16 to the present roll number of 45. Miss M. Grieve, who proposed the formation of the club, was president until her departure from the district in 1927, Since then Mrs J, W. Sutherland has been president. The purpose of forming the club was to give young singers an opportunity to become accustomed to performing in public. The name “ Saravati ” means “ House of Music.”. At the beginning of 1928 a Glee Party was formed under the guidance of Miss 0. Bennett, which consists, at the present time, of a membership of approximately 20 singers..
