VOLUNTARY ENLISTMENT

NEW RECRUITING SYSTEM SATISFACTORY PROGRESS MADE (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 13.. Satisfactory progress is being made in recruiting under the voluntary system of enlistment, according to a statement made by the Minister of Defence (Mr J. G. Cobbe). The Minister stated that he did not desire the commands to hasten unduly any recruiting up to the establishment. He much preferred that care should be exercised in selecting the best class of recruit rather than that' efforts should be directed towards completing the establishments at the earliest possible moment. Mr Cobbe made available for publication the following figures, illustrating the progress made to date:—

These figures do not include officers and bandsmen. The establishment of the mounted rifles for the Northern Command is assured, but attestation is awaking the termination of the brigade camp.
