UNEMPLOYED IN ALBERTA
RESTAURANTS INVADED REFUSAL TO PAY FOR MEALS. OTTAWA, June 13. (Received June 14, at 8 p.m.) A message from Edmonton states that, following threats by the unemployed, allegedly under Communist influence, to seize the civic buildings and loot stores, the Premier (Mr J. E. Brownlee) called for the militia, and a detachment of the Strathcona Horse was rushed in by special train from Calgary and held in barracks. At Calgary a score of unemployed men invaded the restaurants, refusing to pay after securing meals. They were arrested, but a mob stormed the police headquarters in an attempt to release them. The crowd was, however, dispersed by repeated police charges. At Drumheller, Alberta, the whole of the Town Council was arrested on the complaint of men who arc out, of work and charged with failing to provide for the unemployed as provided by the criminal code of Canada. The law stipn lates that it shall he the duty of civic bodies to “ make suitable provision, for the poor and destitute.”
